biography
Born in Bray Co. Wicklow in 1968, he launched his career with a number of solo shows in and around Dublin before migrating to the United States. He subsequently held a series of group and solo shows in California and Arizona. While pursuing his career in fine art Laurence has worked as a motion picture set and scenery artist. To date he has collaborated with many artists and directors on films such as Michael Collins, The Count of Monte Cristo, The End of the Affair , Saving Private Ryan and King Arthur. He has since returned to Ireland and, due to significant success, has elected to focus his career in fine art.
In 2003, Laurence was asked by the organisers of the televised Festival of Arts Competition in Sardinia to represent Ireland. Out of thirty participating European artists, Laurence was awarded 2nd prized and had works accepted into their permanent collection. It was also the year he started with the Oisėn Gallery in Dublin with a solo show featuring incandescent figurative paintings on broad canvases. The show was a success with private collectors and financial institutions in both London and Dublin. The Office of Public Works was also represented among the buyers.
His second solo show at the Oisėn was a body of large skyscapes and seascapes, a great success bringing a stronger interest and following. He was picked up by new galleries in London and Ireland. A recent move to a new home and studio in Muine Bheag, Co. Carlow has seen a change in his subject matter and approach. Today, Laurences concern is with challenging traditional ways in interpreting and framing the many difference landscapes of Ireland. His very unique and subtle way of blurring the boundaries between physical and fantasy offers dramatic interpretations of nature and elemental forces.
His latest body of work is dealing with the spiritual aspect of the landscape. Here he combines the figurative with the landscape to create an image of both peace and vision. Dealing with Glendalough and its timeless earthy self, from summer through winter. This will culminate in a solo show in the Oisėn Gallery in April, 2007.
